What could have pushed this young woman to kill her ex-boyfriend, someone she was once in love with if not still in such a manner? This was my reaction the first time I read of Jodi Arias a few years ago.
on June 4, 2008, 31 year old Travis Alexander was murdered and was found dead 5 days later with multiple stab wounds (nearly 30), a slit jugular vein, carotid artery and trachea (slashed from ear to ear) and a gunshot wound to his head. The primary suspect was none other than his 27 year old ex-girlfriend, Jodi Arias.
After being named a suspect, Jodi told 3 different stories before settling on that of self defense. On July 8, 2008, she was indicted by a grand jury for first degree murder. The murder trial of Jodi arias began in earnest on December 10, 2012 and on May 8, 2013 after a 15 hour deliberation, she was found guilty of first degree murder. Now time for the sentencing, the jury could not make up its mind on the death penalty so on May 23, 2013, the judge declared a mistrial.
Fast forward to October 20, 2014, a new sentencing trial began which continued on till this year. Today, March 5, 2015 after 3 days of deliberating, another hung jury preceding yet another mistrial and under the state of Arizona’s law, a second mistrial automatically precludes the death penalty from the sentencing options. So, this means that Jodi Arias gets to live, she would serve a life sentence with or without the possibility of parole.
Being a little bit familiar with the facts of this case, having followed the trial over the years, I think she’s a sociopath but that not withstanding, something sinister must have happened that night which tipped the scale thereby pushing her over the edge, I mean, stabbing someone 30 times, slitting his throat and shooting him in the head is an overkill.
