The nearly men of football…

Whenever I see Avram Grant on the touchline, my mind automatically goes to Moscow, 2008, Champions League final, Man United vs Chelsea, John Terry steps up to take the crucial penalty that would send Chelsea to glory and boom!! he misses. Chelsea loses, Man United wins. Glorious!!

Avram Grant the nearly man of English football took Chelsea to the league cup final, lost to Tottenham, and missed out on both premier league and champions league trophies, losing to Man United on both occasions. He took Portsmouth to the FA cup final but ironically lost to Chelsea, his former team.

Now he is coaching Ghana, one of the nearly team of African football, who haven’t won the African Cup of Nations trophy in over 30years. Their opponents another nearly team, Cote d’ivoire have never lifted the trophy in their entire history!!! You wouldn’t know that considering the caliber of players they have.
Who do you think will win? My mind tells me Ghana have more determination and zeal to win with the young footballers in the team but am Nigerian, so i will root for Cote d’ivoire.

Now unto the Derby Weekend of football; we have Arsenal vs Tottenham, Everton Vs Liverpool and Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid. Goals!!! Goals!!!!! Goals galore!!!!! It is in these times we take a few seconds to thank God for the gift of football. What more can you ask of in this life?

Some new faces to look out for; Filio Djuricic for Southampton, Aaron Lennon in an Everton shirt, Darren Fletcher in a West Brom shirt, Gabriel Paulista for Arsenal and of course the big one Juan Cuadrado for Chelsea. Now tell me why Chelsea won’t win the premier league?

  1. @ Afcon2015- Nice write up, but i would like to correct the fact that Ivory coast have never won the trophy in their history. They actually did in Senegal 92 by pipping Ghana(the same opposition on Sunday)to win the trophy via penalties(11-10). I hope they still win it this time.#DejavuSenegal92.

  2. @AvramGrant- it’s been a case of near success syndrome when it comes to winning major trophies, no disrespect to the Israeli and Serbian clubs he managed in the past. Let’s see if he would outwit Herve Renard tactically in this one to break the jinx. But it’s truly a hard one to call considering it’s a West African derby and both sides are gunning to end the wait for another continental title..
